When I was in college, I took a class called “Modern Physics”. That was so long ago, if I told my kids that, they would think it was taught by Aristotle or Da Vinci and that the main course of study was phlogiston and the aether.
This reminds me of all those homework problems where had to give answers in mass units of electron volts per (speed of light)2.
Some guy said that E=Mc2
Energy = Mass x (speed of light)2

I’d like to thank my brother, Peter, and his wife Melissa and their family for a fabulous time, and for inviting my son Jacob and myself to join them on their vacation.
The idea that killing people is a method of political expression appalls me. There are many, many, things wrong with the United States, but there is still a largely functional First Amendment to the Constitution. Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, the Right to Peaceably Assemble, even the right to petition Government for redress of grievances still exist.
Why, then, blow up some random group of people? No matter what message was intended, the message received is that you can’t act like a grownup and be part of society. Instead, you are going to make us sorry you didn’t get your way. Couldn’t you just hold your breath until you turn blue?
If you hadn’t noticed, most of the rules we live by are for people who can’t or won’t understand a single basic rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The golden rule. Bill & Ted, in their Excellent Adventure, were on to something: “Be excellent to one another!”
Societies are constantly changing, changing in laws, changing in social mores, changing in technology, changing in finance and changing in medicine. Creating change is hard, hard work. It is often thankless work. But you change the horse by leading him to the water and offering him a drink. Shooting the horse doesn’t help. Changing people by educating and inspiring them is the way to go. Changing them by instilling fear in them just leads to anger for everyone. Yoda knew that a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. “Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering”. Smart little green dude.
And, while I’m ranting: Let’s just stop with all the “We need a law!” crap. Boston, Newtown, Aurora CO, Columbine – in every case the assaults and murders were illegal. Does anyone really believe that there is a criminal out there thinking, “I’m gonna kill that guy in my home-ec class today. Except, wait- the school is a gun free zone, dammit! I don’t want to break THAT law when I kill him.” People that do these terrible acts are either criminals or mentally unbalanced. They aren’t interested in, nor will they follow some arbitrary law controlling the shape of a rifle or the number of cartridges in a gun or the size of a pressure cooker.
